Citizenship under pressure by Hmimssa Flashcards
What is a vertial mosaic?
a term used by sociologist John Porter to convey the concept that Canada is a mosaic of different ethnic, language, regional and religious groupings unequal in status and power
Canada’s society, instead of melting together like a pot, is layered in separate groups.
Why is it important to study group tensions ?
becuase sometimes the diversity (especially religious diversity) leads to tensions influencing how Quebecers live together and the types of civic engagement in the public sphere.
Define the theory of group tension
A crisis happen / focal incident charged with tensions happnes
Then it creates a moral panic:
Something new or different pops up: This could be a new fashion trend, a type of music, or even a technology.
The media goes wild: News outlets jump on the story, making it seem like a bigger deal than it is.
People get scared: They worry that this new thing is a threat to society’s morals or safety.
Things get out of hand: Laws might get passed, or people might start treating each other differently based on the fear.
