Circulatory System Test Flashcards
Explain why it is not accurate to describe blood as a red liquid
Red blood cells are the reason your blood appears red however it’s components are different colours.
State three functions of the blood
Transport
Protection
Regulation
State the function of arteries
Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart
State the function of veins
Return deoxygenated blood to the heart
State the function of the capillaries
Bring nutrients and oxygen to tissues and remove waste products
State the function of the heart valves
Blood passes through them before leaving each chamber of the heart
State the function of the coronary arteries
Supply blood to the heart muscle
What is a stent?
A splint placed temporarily inside a duct, canal, or blood vessel to aid healing or relieve an obstruction.
What is a natural pacemaker?
Controls the heart rate by sending electrical signals through the heart muscle, making the heart contract and pump blood throughout the body
How does an artificial pacemaker work?
The pulse generator sends electrical impulses to the heart to help it pump properly
Explain how a leaky heart valve can cause health issues
Can cause the heart to work harder and not pump the same amount of blood
Describe how air is moved into and out of your lungs
As the diaphragm contracts, it flattens out, moving towards an abdominal cavity. This causes an increase in the size of the chest cavity, thus creating a vacuum into which air is drawn in. As ribs fall and diaphragm moves up, volume of the chest gets smaller and air leaves the lungs.
What is a tumour?
A swelling of a part of the body, generally without inflammation, caused by an abnormal growth of tissue, either belign or malignant
What is the difference between benign and malignant tumours?
Benign is noncancerous and won’t invade nearby tissue
