Circulatory System Flashcards
Circulatory system role
- deliver nutrients and oxygen to cells
- remove carbon dioxide from cells
- remove waste to where it can be disposed of
- distribute heat around the body
Define heart
One of the mist vital organs of the human body it is the pump that pushes blood through the body
Direct of blood flow
Vena cava-> right atrium-> right ventricle-> pulmonary arteries-> lungs-> pulmonary veins-> left atrium-> left ventricle-> aorta (to body)
Deoxygenated blood
Blood flowing in right side of heart is deoxygenated (blue)
Oxygenated blood
Blood flowing in the left side of the heart is oxygenated (red)
3 main types of blood vessels
Arteries
Capillaries
Viens
Arteries function
Carry blood away from heart
Have thick strong walls to maintain high pressure
Capillaries function
Very small diameter blood vessels with thin walls
Oxygen and nutrients are transferred into cells
Carbon dioxide and waste are transferred out of cells
Veins function
Carry blood towards heart
Have some values so that blood flows in one direction
Thin walls
What blood carries
Nutrients
Oxygen
Carbon dioxide
Wastes
blood components
Red blood cells=45%
Carry oxygen and carbon dioxide
Doughnut like shape to squeeze through small capillaries
Blood components
White blood cell= 0.1%
Attack disease and infection
Bind to breakdown foreign substances killing them
Blood components
Platelets= 0.01%
Stop bleeding
At a cut, they band together with fibrinogen and seal the hole
Blood component
Plasma= 55%
Liquid in which all the cells, nutrients and wastes are bathed
Define bruises
Occurs when blood vessels are ruptured and blood leaks into the surrounding tissue
