Circulatory System Flashcards
What is Homeostasis?
Keeping everything in the body level.
What does the circulatory system do?
Passes nutrients (amino acids, electrolytes and lymph), gases, hormones and blood cells to and from cells in the body, to help fight diseases, stabilize body temperature and ph and to maintain homeostasis.
What are the 3 major parts that the circulatory is divided into?
Heart, blood, blood vessels
What are the 3 types of blood vessels?
Arteries: Carry blood away from the heart (When oxidized)
Veins: Carry blood to the heart (Not oxidized)
Capilleries: Connect the arteries and veins together, O2, nutrients and waste are passed through the capillary walls
Where is the heart?
Middle of the chest and slightly to the left
What does the blood do in the circulatory system?
Pumped by the heart. It is not just liquid, there is solids in it and CO2 and O2
How much blood is in an adult body?
5L
What are red blood cells jobs (erythrocites)?
They are responsible for carrying O2 and CO2. They pick up O2 from the lungs and transport it to all the body cells after delivering the O2, all of the cells gathers CO2 and transports its back to the lungs where we exhale it.
There are 5000000 red blood cells in one drop of blood.
What do WBC (leukocites) do?
Help the body fight germs. They attack and fight germs when they enter the body. When you have an infection your body produces more WBC. Sometimes our bodies need help fighting the infection and the Doctor will prescribe and Abx
What do platelets do?
Blood cells that stop bleeding. If platelets attach to one another and are flowing through blood vessels, they can flow right up to your heart and cause a blood clot. Which can lead to strokes if they get into your brain.
What is plasma?
Is the liquid part of the blood. 1/2 of your blood is mode of plasma. Plasma is made in the liver. (Blood thinners are plasma)
Whats the heart do?
Sends blood around your body. The right side of your heart receives blood from your body and pumps it to your lungs. The left side receives blood from the lungs and pumps it to the body. Before each beat your heart fills with blood. Then the muscle contracts to push the blood along. The heart is made up of 4 different blood-filled areas.
What are the 4 sections of the heart called?
Top 2 are called Atria. (When talking about them individually called atrium. Bottom 2 are called ventricles
What separates the heart in two halves?
*Septum
