Circulatory System Flashcards
Circulatory (vascular) system
Controls the circulation of blood and lymph through the body
Cardiovascular or blood-vascular system
Responsible for circulation of blood
Includes heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries
Lymph - vascular or lymphatic system
Responsible for circulation of lymph
Includes lymph nodes and lymphatic vessels
The heart (circulatory system function)
Encased in pericardium membrane
Contracts and relaxes to move blood
Consists of 4 chambers
Beats 60-100 times per minute
The heart consists of
Pericardium
Right atrium
Left atrium
Right ventricle
Left ventricle
The blood
Circulates through the body as a sticky, salty fluid
Brings nourishment and oxygen to all body parts
Carries toxins and waste products to liver and kidneys to be elliminated
The blood

Average amount of blood in adults
8-10 pints
Red blood cells
(Erythrocytes or red corpuscles)
Carry oxygen and contain hemoglobin
Oxygen poor deep scarlet red
Oxygen rich bright red
White blood cells
(Leukocytes or white corpuscles)
Fight bacteria and other foreign substances
Blood platelets
(Thrombocytes)
Responsible for clotting blood
Plasma
Fluid part of blood
90% water
Carries red and white blood cells and blood platelets
Arteries
Tubular, elastic, thick walled
Carry blood from heart
Carry pure blood
Arteries
Tubular, elastic, thick walled
Carry blood from heart
Carry pure blood
Veins
Tubular, elastic, thin walled
Carry blood to heart
Carry impure blood
Valves prevent back flow
Closer to surface than arteries
Blood flow through the heart
Systemic (general) circulation - to heart
Pulmonary circulation - to lungs
Systemic (general) circulation - back to heart and to body
Arteries and veins of face head and neck
Common carotid artery CCA - supplies blood to head face and neck
Internal carotid artery ICA - supplies blood to brain, eyes, forehead
Supraorbital - supplies blood to parts of forehead and eyes
Infraorbital - supplies blood to muscles of eye region
External carotid artery ECA - supplies blood to skin and muscles of head
Internal and external jugular vein IJV EJVreturns all blood from head, face, and neck, to the heart
Posterior auricular artery - supplies blood to sides and top of head
External maxillary artery - supplies blood to lower portion of the face
Superficial temporal branches
Branch of external co-write, branches into smaller arteries, supplies blood to sides and top of head
Frontal, forehead
Parietal, crown and sides
Middle temporal m blood to temples
Transverse, blood to Masseter muscle
Anterior auricular, blood to anterior part of ear
External maxillary branches
Breaks into smaller branches, supplies blood to lower portion of face, including mouth and nose
Submental, supplies blood to chin and lower lip
Inferior labia, supplies blood to lower lip
Superior Labuan supplies blood to Upper lip and septum
Ulnar artery
Supplies blood to little finger side of forearm and the smaller arteries of the hand
Radial artery
Supplies blood to thumb side of arm and hand
Arteries and Blevins of lower leg and foot
Popliteal artery, supplies blood to knee joint and muscles in thigh and calf
Anterior tibial artery, supplies blood just below knee and passes down between tibia and fibula, branches off into smaller arteries into skin and muscles of lower leg
Dorsal is pedis, supplies blood to upper surface of foot
Sap genius vein, transports blood from veins in foot to femoral artery
Femoral vein, transports blood to heart and lungs for oxygenation
Lymph-vascular system (lymphatic system)
Picks up and returns leaked tissue fluid and plasma proteins to the cardiovascular system
Transports nourishment from blood
Carries away product if metabolism and chemical change
Helps maintain fluid balance
Distribute white blood cells to help develop immunity
Lymph
Colorless liquid that travels through lymph vessels
Byproducts of plasma passing nourishment to capillaries and cells
small vessels that take nutrients and oxygen from arteries to the cells
Capillaries
Veins carry blood from
The capillaries to the heart
The internal carotid artery supplies blood to
The brain, eyes, and forehead
Artery that supplies blood to the lower lip
Inferior labial
Blood vessels that carry impure blood
Veins
Lower chambers of the heart include
Left and right ventricle
Artery that supplies the sides of the nose with blood
Angular
Artery that supply blood to little finger side of forearm
The ulnar artery
Superior labial
Smaller branch of the external maxillary artery that supplies blood to the upper lip and septum
Radial arteries
Supply blood to thumb side of arm and hand
Upper chambers of heart include
Left and right atrium
The process of blood traveling from the heart, throughout the body, and back to heart
Systemic or general circulation
Dorsalis pedis
Arteries that supply blood to upper surface of foot
Component responsible for the clotting of blood
Thrombocytes
External maxillary
Artery that supplies blood to the lower portion of face, including mouth and nose
Artery that supplies blood to the knee joint and muscles in thigh
Popliteal artery
