Circulatory System Flashcards
Function of circulatory system
The circulatory system’s job
is to distribute oxygen and
nutrients throughout the
body and collect waste
materials via the
bloodstream.
3 main components:
- Blood
- Blood vessels
- Heart
Blood
Blood is a collection of cells
that have been specialized to
perform a set of particular tasks
And even though it is a liquid,
it is considered to be a
connective tissue
What’s in human blood
- Plasma (liquid)
- Red Blood Cells
- White Blood Cells
- Platelets
Blood Vessels
Arteries: Vessels that carry blood away from the heart.
Veins: Vessels that carry blood towards the heart.
Capillaries: Tiny vessels that can only accommodate one
red blood cell at a time. Nutrients, wastes, water and gases are exchanged through the capillaries via diffusion.
Arteries
Arteries are large blood vessels that carry blood away
from the heart to cells and tissues
Arteries have thicker muscular and elastic walls
High pressure, blood travels quickly in spurts (use this to
measure pulse)
Veins
Blood returns to the heart through blood vessels called
veins
The walls of veins are thinner and less muscular
Low blood pressure, blood moves very slowly
Capillaries
Capillaries are the smallest blood vessel in the body
The capillary wall is made up of a thin, single layer of cells
The diameter is so small that red blood cells must travel through capillaries in single file
Blood pressure approaches almost zero
Blood moves very slowly to allow exchange:
Nutrients and oxygen to pass out of the blood into body
cells and tissues
Waste products and carbon dioxide pass from body cells and tissues into the blood
Heart
The heart is the engine of the circulatory system. The
heart’s job two-fold:
To pump blood to the lungs so that tissues can receive
oxygen.
To pump blood to the rest of the body, so that all of the body’s cells can receive oxygen.
- The heart is made up of two chambers that receive blood called atria, and two chambers that pump blood are called ventricles.
Chambers of the heart
Each pump contains two chambers:
an atrium
a ventricle
Heart has four chambers total
Blood flows from atrium 🡪 ventricle
Heart as a “Double-Pump”
Right pumps
blood to the
lungs
Left pumps
