Q

Biological hierarchy from the cell to the organ systems

A
  • Organisms in the plant and animal world are multicellular
  • The cell is the smallest unit of life
  • When a group of the same kind of cells are put together so that they perform a task, you get a tissue

Q

Organ

A

When a group of the same kind of tissues
gather together to perform a particular
function in a larger organism, the tissue
becomes an organ

Q

Organ System

A

Organs cannot function alone; they act in
tandem with other similar organs to form
an organ system

Q

Tissue

A

Groups of cells that function together to perform specialized tasks
are called tissues
In animals, cells specialize to form 4 types of tissues
The cells in each tissue work together to accomplish important
tasks

Q

Epithelial Tissue

A

Cells that are packed together to form many layers.
- Epithelial tissue can be used to line, support/protect, or to
cover your body.

A

A yellow liquid that carries all the blood cells

17
Q

Muscle Tissue

A

Responsible for movement

18
Q

Different types of muscles

A
  1. Cardiac Muscle
  2. Smooth Muscle
  3. Skeletal Muscle
19
Q

Cardiac Muscle

A

Found only in the heart

20
Q

Smooth Muscle

A

Responsible for involuntary movement
- Examples: Peristalsis – push food down the digestive tract

21
Q

Skeletal Muscle

A

Responsible for voluntary movement
- Examples: Moving your limbs (arms, legs)

22
Q

Nervous Tissue: Nerve Cells

A

Deliver electrical messages from your brain to your muscles and vice-versa. Responsible for sensing pain, heat and pressure, and for initiating muscular contractions.

Nerve cells are to the body, like wires are to an electrical circuit.
