Circulatory system Flashcards

1
Q

What are the functions of the circulatory system?

A

1.Circulate blood to body
2.Transport O2, water and nutrients to cells in the blood
3.Transport CO2 and wastes away from the cells
4.Maintain body temperature
5.White blood cells fight infection

Q

Describe the 3 types of blood vessels

A

ARTERIES:
Carries blood away from the heart
Your pulse is the feeling of flow of your blood through the arteries, e.g your wrist (radial pulse) + neck (cartoid pulse)

VEINS:
Carry blood towards the heart
Moves by contraction of skeletal muscle which runs alongside walls of veins
Valves: allow the return of blood to the heart, but prevent the back flow of blood
CAPILLARIES:
Allows for diffusion: the passing of oxygen to tissues and removal of carbon dioxide through different
tiny blood vessels

Q

What is the cardiac cycle

A

The cardiac cycle is the process that happens with each heartbeat. It has two main phases: relaxation and contraction.

During relaxation, the heart chambers fill with blood. First, the atria, which are the top chambers, receive blood from the veins. Then, they squeeze to push the blood into the ventricles, which are the bottom chambers.

After the chambers are filled, the heart contracts. First, the ventricles contract and pump the blood out of the heart into the arteries. Then, the chambers relax again to start the process over.

Q

What is pulmonary and systemic circulation

A

Pulmonary system is where blood cycles through your lungs and back
Systemic circulation is where blood cycles through the rest of the body,

Q

What are the functions of blood

A

Transport of nutrients and waste products
Nutrients from the digestive system and delivery of oxygen from the lungs to the cells
Carbon dioxide from the cells to the lungs
Regulation of body’s temperature
Blood absorbs the heat produced by working muscles and carries it to the skin causing sweating (cooling mechanism) to occur
Protection of the body
White blood cells fight off bacteria
Blood clotting occurs to prevent severe blood loss
