Circulatory System Flashcards
Main function of the circulatory system
Carry oxygen and nutrients to every cell of the body and to remove carbon dioxide and other wastes from the cells
The movement of materials from blood to cells and vice versa
Diffusion
Pumps blood through the blood vessels
Heart
What are the two upper chambers of the heart?
The right and left atria (atrium)
What are the two lower chambers of the heart?
The right and left ventricles (ventricle)
What receives blood coming into the heart?
The right and left atria
What pumps blood out of the heart?
The right and left ventricle
A wall of tissue that divides the heart in half
Septum
Also known as the river of life
Blood
Blood is accurately called?
Fluid tissue
A pale yellowish liquid that is about 92 percent water and is the fluid part of blood
Plasma
Transports oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the body
Red blood cell (Erythrocytes)
Help defend the body from diseases
White blood cells (Leukocytes)
Helps in blood clotting
Blood platelets (Thrombocytes)
The shape of the red blood cell
Concave
A red chemical pigment from RBC to transport oxygen from the lungs to all cells of the body
Hemoglobin
Long sticky strands formed by platelets which forms a clot
Fibrin
Blood vessels that move blood away from the heart
Arteries
Blood vessels that move blood with wastes toward the heart
Veins
Very small blood vessels where the arteries and veins connect
Capillaries
Why is the capillaries one cell thick?
This is for oxygen and nutrients to diffuse from the capillary walls to the body cells and lets other wastes and carbon dioxide diffuse to the capillaries
Transports oxygen-depleted blood from the heart to the lungs and oxygenate the blood
Pulmonary circulation
Carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the organs and tissues
Systematic circulation
Largest artery of the body and connects to the rest of the body
Aorta
Blood from the abdomen and the lower part of the body
Inferior Vena Cava
Blood from the area of the head, neck and the upper part of the body
Superior Vena cava
Flap of tissue that prevents the backflow of blood and keeps ots flow in one direction
Valve
