Chronic weightloss Flashcards

1
Q

Parasites

A

large strongyles

  • long (6month) migratory lifecycle
  • very pathogenic larval stages
  • extremely sensitive to modern athelmintics

small stronglyes

  • cyathostomins
  • short (8 weeks) migratory lifecycle
  • propensity for >2yrs arrested development

Ascarids

  • medium (3 month) migratory lifecycle
  • migrating stages refractory to anthemintics
  • thick shelled egge robust with prolonged survival in soil

Tapeworm

  • ileo-caecal junction
  • adult stages affected by praziquantal or 2x pyrantel dose

Bots

  • not pathogenic
  • ivermectin is effective
