What are common causes of CP?
Alcohol, autoimmune disease, hereditary, CKD
What pain is associated with CP?
Epigastric pain that goes through to the back
What can relieve CP pain and what can make it worse?
Sitting forward or hot water bottles on epigastrum/back, alcohol makes it worse
What might have developed due to the heat of the hot water bottles?
Erythema ab igne
Other than pain, what signs/symptoms may be present?
Nausea and vomiting, decreased appetite, malabsorption (painless weight loss)
What imaging would you do?
Abdominal USS, CT, MRI
What finding on US confirms diagnosis?
Pancreatic calcification
What lifestyle management would you advise?
No alcohol
What surgical options are there?
Pancreatectomy, pancreatojejunostomy (a duct drainage procedure)
What are some potential complications of CP?
Pseudocyst, DM, biliary obstruction, local arterial aneurysm, splenic vein thrombosis, gastric varices, pancreatic carcinoma
How would you manage CP non-surgically?
Pancreatic enzyme supplements, PPI to help digestion
