Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Flashcards
What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?
CFS is a condition distinguished by persistent fatigue that does not resolve and severely reduces activity levels for at least 6 months
CFS seems to be widespread in North America, but it is often misdiagnosed as a flu or viral infection, hypochondria or depression
The cause of CFS is not well understood
There is a link to FM, which is frequently found in people with CFS, but how the two are connected is unclear
Symptom Picture
CFS can be chronic or recurrent
A primary symptom is disabling fatigue that does not resolve with rest
Other symptoms include aching muscles and joints, spasm, weakness, fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, recurrent upper respiratory tract infections, loss of appetite, intestinal problems, jaundice, memory loss, an inability to concentrate, confusion, anxiety, depression, mood swings, sensitivity to light and heat, sleep disturbances
Many complain of persistent, daily headaches or migraines (may be lack of rest, sleep)
Although not life-threatening, this condition has no cure. Some people recover spontaneously, for others, the condition may improve but recur following periods of stress or illness
Massage
Massage can help increase total hours of sleep and reduce anxiety and depression
Treatments are usually of shorter duration and not vigorous in nature with a relaxation focus
Massage can help to relieve muscular pain and reduce stress levels but be careful not to fatigue the client
Self-Care
A person with CFS must organize their day carefully, assigning priority to activities and allowing for rest periods
It is important to balance activity and rest
Exercise should include strengthening
Maintaining flexibility through stretching is important
Walking is encouraged, beginning with only 5-10 mins and than by adding a few minutes each week, the client will gradually build up to 30 mins a day
