Chronic Diseases and Microbial Interactions Flashcards
Innate Immunity
-non-specific
-first, rapid
-recognizes traits common to groups of pathogens
Components: barrier defenses, chemical defenses, cellular defenses
Primary cause of death in HIC vs LIC
HIC-NCD
LIC-communicable diseases
Immune System
To recognize and eliminate pathogens
Inflammatory Response
Fever: systemic inflammatory response triggered by pyrogens
Septic Shock: (life threatening condition) caused by overwhelming inflammatory response
Pyrogen
Molecules released by macrophages, cause elevations in body temperature
Adaptive immunity
-very specific
-develops after exposure
-uses a large repertoire of receptors
Components: relies on 2 type of lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes
Antigen(Ag)
Substances that can elicit a response from a lymphocyte( B or T cell)
B cell
Produces antibodies
Antibody
Immunoglobulin (lg) that marks pathogens for destruction
T cells
Kills infected target cells or bacteria
Cause of TB
Inhaling infected droplets from a cough or sneeze by an infected person
Symptoms of TB
Spitting, coughing, sneezing, x rays revealing destroyed lung tissue, fever, weakness, loss of appetite
