Chronic Diseases Flashcards
What are Chronic Diseases?
Diseases that persist for a long period or recur throughout life
What are chronic diseases caused by?
Risk factors that are behavioral, environmental, or hereditary
What are Cardiovascular Diseases?
Diseases of the heart (cardio) and blood vessels (vascular)
Cardiovascular Diseases include:
Hypertension Atherosclerosis Heart attack Arrhythmia Congestive heart failure Stroke
What is Hypertension?
Occurs when a person has a blood pressure consistently measuring 140/90 or higher
Hypertension leads to heart disease because of the increased blood pressure on the heart and vessels
Hypertension is known as the
Silent killer
How to reduce risk of developing Hypertension
Exercise Regularly
Maintain a healthy weight
Reduce stress
Eat foods low in sodium
What is Atherosclerosis?
A disease in which fatty substance (including cholesterol) build up inside artery walls. These deposits called plaque cause the artery walls to thicken and narrow=blood flow slows= blood pressure rises.
Atherosclerosis increases your risk of developing
- Arteriosclerosis – hardening of the arteries = lose elasticity and become stif
- Coronary heart disease – coronary arteries narrow = decrease blood flow to
heart
What is a Heart Attack?
occurs when some of the tissue in the heart doesn’t receive its normal blood supply and dies
What is the cause of a heart attack?
usually a blood clot that forms in a coronary artery that has been narrowed by Atherosclerosis
How many people suffer from heart attacks each year.
Each year over a million people in the US suffer a heart attack (500,000 die)
4 Major Risk Factors for heart attacks:
- High blood pressure
- High levels of cholesterol
- Physical Inactivity
- Smoking
What is Arrhythmia?
aka “irregular heart beats” – another form of heart disease
How may you possibly develop (Arrhythmia)?
*May develop from damage to heart caused by heart attack
