Chronic Blepharitis Flashcards
1
Q
Definition
A
Inflammation of the eyelid
2
Q
Classification and its Aetiology
A
- Anterior
- involving anterior lid margin ‘eyelash’
- can be due to:
i. Staph infection
ii. Saborrheic (excess sebum secretion) - Posterior
- involving posterior lid margin ‘meibomian gland’
- postulated due to Staph infection.
3
Q
Pathology
A
- Inflammation of the eyelid
- Can cause tear instability when involving meibomian glands (Dry eyes syndrome)
- Cx:
- conjunctivitis
- keratitis
- chalazion
4
Q
Symptoms
A
Types anterior/posterior cant be distinguished clinically.
- Swelling of the eyelid
- relapsing remitting
- usually in the morning - Dry eyes syndrome
- Conjunctivitis/Keratitis sx
- red eye
- pain, photophobia
5
Q
Signs
A
- Crusting, swelling of the eyelid margin
- Abnormality in the eyelash (anterior)
- tylosis (scarring, notching)
- madarosis (loss of eyelash)
- trichiasis (ingrowth/introverted eyelash)
- Sticky, greasy lashes - Meibomian
- cupping/plugging of gland orifices
- pressure results in expulsion of meibomian fluid
6
Q
Associated clinical features
A
- Atopic conjunctivitis- Staph related
- Saborrheic dermatitis - Saborrheic related
- Acne rosacae/vulgaris - Posterior blepharitis
7
Q
Treatment
A
- Lid hygiene
- soften the crust
- cleaning - Antibiotic
- topical
- tetracyclin (especially in posterior blepharitis)
‘against staph-lipase production’ - Artificial tears
- for dry eyes
