Chromosomes Flashcards
How many chromosomes do we have and how many pairs?
46 and 23 pairs
Cell division Stage one
When your cell is doing its regular job DNA is in the form of chromatin (unwound)
Cell division Stage two
Just before cell division DNA copies itself (duplicate chromatin)
Cell division Stage 3
At the start of cell division the duplicated DNA coils up into chromosomes
Cell division Stage 4
Chromosomes pair up with their copies
Cell division Stage 5
Each duplicated chromosomes consists of sister chromatids (photocopies) joined by a centromere.
Cell division stage 6
One of each pair of homologous chromosomes comes from the father via the sperm cell and one from the mother via the egg cell.
What are genes?
Genes are sections of chromosomes that code for specific traits.
