Chromoblastomycosis Flashcards
What is the genus of 3 common species that cause chromoblastomycosis?
- Fonsecaea
- Phialophora
- Cladophialophora
What is the geographic distribution of fungi that cause chromoblastomycosis?
Found worldwide but most common in tropical and subtropical areas
How is infection with fungi causing chromoblastomycosis acquired?
Traumatic percutaneous inoculation (e.g. contaminated sliver of wood)
What are clinical features of chromoblastomycosis?
Chromoblastomycosis
* Painless chronic skin lesions develop over years
* Veruccous nodules or cauliflower-like masses
* Gradually spread centripetally by cutaneous or lymphatic dissemination
* Male agricultural workers are most commonly affected
* Usually on legs
How is chromoblastomycosis diagnosed?
- Microscopic examination of skin scrapings or biopsies showing characteristic cells
- Rounded, thick-walled, chestnut brown fungal cells (often in a wall-like pattern) on wet film
- Branching hyphae on KOH prep
- Confirmed through cultures that take longer
What is the treatment for chromoblastomycosis?
- Itraconazole, OR
- Terbinafine
