chromatography Flashcards
TLC
Thin layer chromatography
Why is paper used in TLC?
paper is made of cellulose- which has water molecules which are bonded to cellulose during the manufacturing process
why is pencil used in paper chrom?
it is insoluble so will not interrupt investigation
How can compounds be not colourless?
conjugated- having alternating single and double/triple bonds
How can colourless compounds be identified?
By spraying with ninhydrin or UV
limitations of TLC
similar compounds have similar Rf values
unknown compounds have no reference retention time
a small peak could hide under a larger peak
limitations of gas chromatography
similar compounds have similar retention time
unknown compounds have no reference time
a small peak could hide under a larger peak
