Chromatography Flashcards
What are the types of chromatography?
Paper chromatography
Thin layer chromatography (TLC)
Gas chromatography (GC)
High-performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
Retardation factor is what?
A measure if distance that component travelled, divided by the distance the solvent front travelled.
What is retention time?
Time taken for a component to emerge from the column in either a gas chromatograph or a high performance liquid chromatograph
What is the mobile phase of chromatography?
It may be a gas or a solvent mixture, the mobile phase moves past the stationary phase
What is a stationary phase in chromatography?
All times of chromatography have a stationary phase. In paper chromatography it is the paper. In thin layer chromatography it is the fine grace of alumina or silica gel. In gas chromatography it is either a solid or a liquid. In the high performance liquid chromatography it is a solid.
Adsorption definition
The temporary binding of a component to the stationary phase in chromatography.
Desorption definition
The movement into the mobile phase by a component during chromatography.
Absorption definition
The intensity of light remaining after some has been absorbed compared with the intensity of light when none as been absorbed.
What is the difference between absorption and adsorption?
Absorption is all about light and the emission spectrum whereas adsorption is about substances and chromatography.
