Chromatography Flashcards
What is chromotography?
a process used to separate mixtures of colored compounds
What is Paper Chromatography?
use paper as the stationary phase
What is the Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC)?
uses a thin layer of absorbant methanol e.g. silicon gel spread onto a glass sheet as the stationary phase
What does the mixture contain?
more than one compound
What does each compound have?
a different solubility in a given solvent
What does the mobile phase move through?
the stationary phase
What would make a compound further move in the mobile phase?
the more soluble it is
What do the compound separate in order of?
their solubility
1) What do you add?
concentrated spot of mixture to the bottom of stationary phase
2) What is lowered into the solvent?
the end of the chromatography strip (stationary phase)
3) What is carried in different distances?
the compounds according to their solubility
4) If compounds are not visible, what do you use?
a stain
5) What should you do before solvent front reaches the end of stationary phase?
stop
6) How do you identify compounds?
by comparing results to known samples -> Rf values
