Christianity Practices Flashcards
What is worship
Any act that shows devotion or love for God
What are the different types of worship?
Liturgical worship
Non-liturgical worship
Private
Public
What are the key features of liturgical worship?
Follows a set structure e.g. mass (Catholic)
Use a service book and set prayers e.g. Lord’s Prayer
Led by a priest - leads congregation in prayer e.g. Sermon
What are the key features of non-liturgical worship?
Does not follow a set structure
May or may not have a leader (Priesthood of all believers)
Music and Gospel songs performed
Informal worship outside of a church
Give 2 reasons why liturgical worship may be seen as more meaningful that non-liturgical worship
RCC: Mass - important as they receive the blood and body of Christ
Bible readings and sermons educate people about the faith
Give 2 reasons why non-liturgical worship may be seen as more meaningful than liturgical worship
Less scripted/robotic - more emotional impact and personal connection with God
More inclusive - anyone can have an active role (Baptists do not have a set leader)
Give 2 reasons why private worship may be seen as more meaningful than public worship
Able to confess specific things, ask for specific things and praise God for specific things
Jesus prayed alone in the Garden of Gethsemane - follow in his example
Give a quote to support private worship
‘love the Lord with all your heart and all your soul’ - private worship provides a closer connection with God, thus more love shown
Give 2 reasons why public worship may be seen as more meaningful than private worship
Unlikely to become selfish as it follows the ACTS pattern (adoration, confession, thanksgiving and supplication)
Jesus showed importance of public worship at the Last Supper
Give a quote to support public worship
‘For where two or three gather in my name, there I am with them’ - God is present in public worship
What is prayer?
Communication with God and a means of developing a personal relationship with God
What are the 4 components of prayer?
Adoration
Confession
Thanksgiving
Supplication
Why is the Lord’s Prayer important? Give 3 reasons
Jesus taught the words of the Lord’s Prayer when asked how to pray
Emphasises importance of forgiveness and reminds those of God’s power
Contains all 4 components of prayer (ACTS)
Give a quote from the Lord’s Prayer
‘ forgive us for our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass us’
What are informal prayers?
Spontaneous prayer that does not follow a set format
Give an example of when Jesus used informal prayer
In the Garden of Gethsemane when asking for an alternative to his death
Give 3 reasons why prayer is important
Develops relationship with God and fulfils commandment: ‘love the Lord with all your heart and all your soul’
Confession - sin prevents salvation and atonement so confessing to God is important ‘forgive us for our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass us’
Give 2 quotes of prayer
‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength’
‘When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your father who is unseen’
Give 2 reasons why formal, set prayers may be seen as more important than informal, private prayers?
Formal prayer is guaranteed to contain all 4 components of prayer (adoration, confession, thanksgiving and supplication)
Jesus explicitly told his disciples the Lord’s Prayer which is a formal prayer
Give 2 reasons why informal, private prayers may be seen as more important than formal, set prayers
They are more personal which allows for deeper reflection
Jesus often prayed alone and informally (e.g. Garden of Gethsemane) so Christians can too
What is a sacrament?
A ceremony that Christians believe bring God’s grace thus become closer to God
How many sacraments do the Catholic Church have and what are they?
7 sacraments
Baptism, Confirmation, Reconciliation, Eucharist, Anointing of the sick, Holy orders and Marriage
How many sacraments do the Church of England have and what are they
2 sacraments: Eucharist and Baptism
Give 2 reasons why baptism is important
Biblical: Jesus was baptised although he is God’s incarnate and has no sin and commanded disciples to baptise others
Cleanses one of sin
