Q

What is the purpose of the family according to Christian teachings?

A

Procreation and education

Most Christians believe that one of the purposes of marriage is procreation and that family life is a natural goal for Christians. They believe that children are a gift from God and parents should look after them properly, providing security, medical care, food, shelter, clothing, opportunities to develop their talents and an appropriate education.

The family is the setting in which children learn how to live, form relationships, and worship God.
At baptism, Christian parents will often promise to protect their child, to bring them up in a loving way, and to teach them about God. In return, children are expected to respect their parents’ authority and to care for them in their own times of need.
