Christianity Chapter 1: Christian beliefs - 1.5 Salvation Flashcards
What is Salvation?
being saved from sin and the consequences of sin; going to heaven
What quote in The Bible supports the role of Jesus in salvation?
‘For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him’ (John 3:17)
What do Christians believe about humanity’s relationship with god?
Everyone was created for a relationship with God. Whether the account of Adam and Eve is taken as literal or not, it does show that humanity had a perfect relationship with God until they chose to walk away from it.
Why do some Christians suggest that everyone is in need of salvation? Why do other Christians believe humans are in need of salvation?
Some Christians suggest that because Adam and Eve sinned against God, all humanity is automatically sinful and in need of salvation. Other Christians believe that people are not automatically sinful, but that all will sin at one time or another.
What is the primary focus of Christianity?
In many ways the nature of sin is not the primary focus of Christianity. The primary focus is on the God who loved humanity so much that he sent Jesus to die on the cross so that whoever believed in him would have a relationship with God forever John 3:16).
What is the definition of Grace?
Undeserved love
Why do Christians believe they were separated from the love of god?
Christians believe that people were separated from the love of God because they did wrongful things (sin) and disobeyed the law of God. The law consists of guidelines on how people should behave and the most famous part is the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20).
What did Jesus teach about the law?
- The law not enough to save people (Matthew
5:20) and - he was critical of those who congratulated
themselves on keeping the law (Luke 5: 32). - What was needed was repentance and an
acceptance that righteousness was not possible
without the grace that came through Jesus. - This means that just by trying really hard to be good you cannot achieve God’s favour. In the Book of Acts, the Apostle Peter explains that the only way that people can be saved is through Jesus:
‘Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.’ (Acts 4:12)
What do Christians believe are the requirements to be saved?
How does this relate to The Holy Spirit?
- To turn away from sin
- Receive the freely given gift of grace through
Jesus and have faith in him - Christians believe that, when they make this
decision for the first time, they also welcome
the Holy Spirit into their lives.
What is atonement?
At-one-ment
It is the action of restoring the relationship between god and humanity through Jesus’ death
God and humans are ‘at-one’
What do Christians believe about Jesus’ sacrifice to save humanity?
Christians believe Jesus died as an act of love to save humanity, even though humanity did not deserve it. His love is called grace, which means undeserved love.
How is salvation and atonement significant within Christianity?
- Christians believe his death allows humans to
have eternal life - Christians have a moral duty to live their life as
Jesus did caring and loving for each other
‘I have set you an example that you should do as i have done for you’ (John 13:15)
In this way humans are saved from the power and consequences of sin
- God and humanity’s loving relationship is
restored. Christians regularly repent of any
wrongdoing and believe that, because of Jesus
they are forgiven by god.
