What are the Christian views on contraception?
Bible doesn’t explicitly approve but there are some passages that say sex should be enjoyed for purposes other than sex
Children are God’s greatest gift within marriage and God commanded “Be Fruitful and Multiply” and contraception is flouting this rule
Christians believe it may be acceptable to avoid bringing children into the world in some situations a e.g. economical, environmental, physical and psychological.
Onan, Genesis
Onan practices coitus interruptus with his brothers wife.
This interpretation supports the idea that contraception is morally wrong
Also supports that there is only one kind of good sexual act : sex between a man and a woman who are married and who are having sex to produce children
Catholic Church view on contraception
Artificial contraception goes against natural law
It is sinful because it may encourage infidelity
“The use of contraception that … renders procreation impossible is intrinsically evil” Catechism of the Catholic Church
Humane vitae
“every sexual act should have the possibility of creating new life” (Humane Vitae, 1968)
Anglican and Non-Conformist views on contraception
Accept that people should have as many children as they are able to care for
Arguments against homosexuality
Old Testament condemns homosexual acts in Leviticus “you will not have intercourse with a man as you would with a woman”
Catechism of the Catholic Church “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered “
Arguments in favour of homosexuality
sexual acts cannot result in children, it is not right to forbid any action that is a physical expression of genuine love
Many within CofE welcome homosexual hristians but does not allow them to marry in the church
