RR for worship
RR = ‘Blessed are those who dwell in your house, ever singing your praise’ - Psalm 84
Importance of worship
To thank God for his blessings
To ask for forgiveness of sin
To seek God’s help for themselves or others
To deepen their relationship with God
Liturgical worship
A church service which follows a set structure
Non-liturgical and informal worship
A service which doesn’t follow a set text or ritual
The service is usually focused on the word of God and Bible readings
Anyone can get involved
Private worship
When a believer praises God by themselves
Makes worship more personal and connected to God
Involves prayer, meditation, or studying a Bible passage
Set prayers
They have been written down and said more than once by more than one person
E.g. The Lord’s Prayer, The Hail Mary, Psalm 23
Informal prayer
Prayer that is made up by an individual using his or her own words
Sacrament
Are rites through which the believer receives a special gift of grace
E.g. baptism, holy communion
Importance of sacraments
Nourish and strengthen faith with God
When taking part in a sacrament you receive God’s grace
RR for baptism
‘Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them’ - The Great Commission
The symbols of baptism
Water symbolises the washing away of sins
The Holy Spirit bestows grace to the believer
Infant baptism
The ritual through which a baby becomes a member of the Church
Water is poured on the head of the baby
Godparents and parents promise to bring up the child in the Christian faith
The priest says - ‘I baptise you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit’
Importance of infant baptism
The infant is freed from original sin
Introduces the infant to the love of God and into the Church as soon as possible
The parents can thank God for their new baby and celebrate with friends and family
Believers baptism
The ritual through which an adult becomes a member of the Church
The believer is fully immersed in a pool
Minister will talk about the importance of baptism
The minister says - ‘In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit’
Importance of believers baptism
Freed from the original sin
Jesus was baptized as an adult by John The Baptist
Holy communion
A sacrament in which believers receive Jesus (his blood and body) in the form of wine and bread
RR for holy communion
‘This is my blood spilt for you, drink it in memory of me, this is my body broken for you, eat in memory of me’ - Jesus’ Last Supper
Catholic perception on holy communion
They are becoming one with God
(Transubstantiation)
Protestant perception on holy communion
Holy communion is a reminder of Jesus’ sacrifice with them thanking him for it
Other denominations perception on holy communion
An act in which believers become closer to God
The importance of holy communion
Helps to strengthen their faith and relationship with God
Unites communities of believers together through the sharing of the wine and bread
Pilgrimage
A journey by a believer to a holy site for religious reasons
E.g. Lourdes and Iona
Importance of pilgrimage
Forgivness of sins
To seek a cure for an illness
To ask for blessings
