Christians who take the bible literally
Gospel
The names of the books about the life of Jesus in the bible: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John
Grace
Unconditional love that God shows to people who do not deserve it
Incarnation
God in human form, God made flesh
Immanence
The idea that God is in the world and knowable
Inconsistent triad
Concept developed by JL Mackie to show that God can’t be both all loving and all powerful due to the existence of evil
Messiah
The anointed one who is seen as the saviour by Christians
Mission
An organised effort to spread the Christian message
Moral evil
Caused by human action e.g. war
Natural evil
Caused by nature but directly impacts on humanity e.g. earthquake but also due to human action e.g. global warming
Omnibenevolent
The idea that God is all-loving
Omniscient
The idea that God is all-knowing
Omnipotent
The idea that God is all-powerful
Omnipresent
The idea that God is present everywhere
Orthodox
A branch of the Christian church, largely found in Greece and Russia
Protestant
A branch of the Christian church that broke away from the Roman Catholic Church
Reconciliation
The process of making people in conflict friendly again
Resurrection
The physical return of Jesus on the third day after he died
Roman Catholic
The largest Christian group, based in Rome with the pope as its leader
Salvation
The saving of the soul from sin
Transcendence
The idea that God is beyond the world and unknowable
Trinity
The belief in God the father, God the son and God the Holy Spirit
Just
God is fair to all and he forgives those who say sorry for their actions. The Psalms say. “God is fair and just”(Psalm 25:8).
