what is moral evil?
evil that is brought about by the cruel actions of people e.g murder
what is natural evil?
evil that is caused by the world we live in that is no ones fault e.g earthquakes
what is ‘the fall’?
the change from a perfect world to one containing evil, caused by adam and eve disobeying god
what are the three parts of the trinity?
the father - he created the universe and sustains it
the son - jesus who is the incarnation of god in human form
the holt spirit - the presence of god all around us
what is the nicene creed?
a statement of beliefs made at the conclusion of nicaea that declared jesus was one with god this made it clear for christians that jesus is just as important as god
how was the world created according to genesis?
god created the world in six days and rested on the seventh day
why is it special that god created mankind in his own image?
they believe that humans should be loving and fair like god as they were made in his image
what do christians think will happen on judgement day?
all people will be judged and those that god approves of will enter heaven
what is purgatory?
a place where catholic’s are believed sins are punished after a persons death
what does incarnation mean?
the act by god in which god became human as jesus christ
what does ascension mean?
the event that happened 40 days after resurrection when jesus returned to god
what does salvation mean?
a soul being saved from death or sin
what does crucifixion mean?
a roman method of execution in which criminals were nailed to a cross, it was how jesus died
how would private worship take place?
it may take place at home e.g saying grace before eating
what is liturgical worship?
a type of worship which services follow a set structure set by the church
what does sacrament mean?
a ceremony where christians receive gods grace
what is baptism?
the sacrament where christians are welcomed into the church and the holy water washes away their ‘sin’
what are set prayers?
formal prayers that are church tradition
what is the name for the period from ash wednesday to easter sunday?
lent it lasts for 40 days
what is midnight mass?
a church service held on the 25th of december at midnight to welcome in christmas day
what does evangelism mean?
spreading the christian message with the aim of converting people
what are street pastors ?
churchgoers in towns and cities who volunteer on weekends to support anyone in need of help
what do missionaries do?
missionaries go to other countries to spread the christian message
what is the persecution of christians?
the mistreatment of christians because of their faith
what does reconciliation mean?
coming together and making peace
what is non-liturgical worship?
worship in a church that does not follow a set order or rules
what is private worship?
worship done on your own or in the home
how do christian churches help believers respond to persecution?
some will be taught to react with forgiveness and love and to love their enemies, there are many christian charities that respond to large scale persecution e.g the barnabus fund, some will be helped to turn the other cheek and to pray and financially support persecuted people
how do christians work in the local community?
some will help with spiritual needs and pray for the local community whereas others will help the community in more physical ways such as donating to food banks like the trussel trust or becoming street pastors or school pastors
why is holy communion important to christians?
it represents jesus’ last supper with his disciples and helps them connect with god
what do the bread and wine represent at holy communion?
the bread and wine represent jesus’ body and blood they symbolise jesus’ sacrifice for human sin
what did jesus say at the last supper?
he said to ‘do this in remembrance of me’
what christian denominations say that holy communion is a sacrament?
catholic, orthodox and anglican
what is a sacrament?
a ceremony which gives spiritual grace
what does the holy communion service do?
the service unites the worshipper with christ and brings christians together and unites members of the church
