Chpt 23 - Resistance Flashcards
1
Q
What is resistance?
A
(of a conductor) is the ratio of the p.d. across it to the current flowing through it. (R = V/I)
–> Unit = Ohm
2
Q
What is ohm’s law?
A
For certain conductors (mainly metals), at constant temperature, the current flowing through them is directly proportional to the p.d. across them ( V & I –> V/I = a constant)
3
Q
Resistors in series
A
(R = R1 +R2 + R3)
4
Q
Resistors in parallel
A
(1/R = 1/R1 +1/R2 + 1/R3)
5
Q
Factors affecting the resistance of a conductor:
A
Temperature
length
Cross-sectional Area
Material (from which its made)
6
Q
What is a thermistor?
A
a semiconductor whose resistance decreases rapidly with increasing temperature.
7
Q
What is resistivity?
A
p (rho) = RA/l
unit = Ohm metre
