A surgical procedure done in a manner that causes little or no trauma or injury to the patient; often performed through a cannula using lasers, endoscopes, or laparoscopes.
Minimally invasive surgery (MIS)
A system of healthcare providers and organizations that provides (or arranges to provide) a coordinated range of services to a specific population.
Integrated delivery network (IDN)
To make safe by removing or reducing contamination by infectious organisms or other harmful substances; the reduction of contamination to an acceptable level.
Decontamination
A part of standard precautions to prevent skin and mucous membrane exposure when in contact with blood and body fluid of any patient. Includes fluid-resistant clothing, gloves, eye protection, face masks, and shoe covers.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Information provided by a device manufacturer that provides detailed instructions on how to properly use and process the device.
Instructions for Use (IFU)
An inventory control system for products/equipment typically used in an OR that involves use of an enclosed or covered cart generally prepared for one surgical case, and not used for generally supply replenishment.
Case cart system
A cart prepared for an individual procedure. Typically contains all instruments, supplies, and utensils needed for a specific procedure.
Case cart
A document that identifies a physician’s needs (requests and preferences) for a specific medical procedure.
Doctor’s (Physician’s) preference card
A list of supplies, and utensils and instruments for a specific procedure.
Case cart pull sheet
The healthcare department responsible for researching, ordering receiving, and managing inventory.
Material Management department
Method of using appropriate barriers to reduce the risk of transmission of blood borne and other pathogens from both recognized and unrecognized sources. Basic level of protection control.
Standard precautions
An infection that is not present when a patient is admitted to a hospital or healthcare facility.
Healthcare-associated infection (HAI)
A Human Resources tool that identifies the major tasks performed by individuals in specific positions.
Job description
Association recognition attained by individuals with educational and/or work experience requirements who successfully complete an examination process demonstrating their knowledge of pertinent, job-related subject matter.
