Sleep disorders
A group of syndromes characterised by disturbance in a person’s amount, quality, or timing of sleep, or in behaviours or physiological conditions associated with sleep.
Sleep deprivation
Inadequate duration, or poor quality of sleep.
Full sleep deprivation
When an individual has no sleep within a 24-hour period.
Partial sleep deprivation
When an individual sleeps for some duration within a 24-hour period, but the sleep duration is too short, or the quality of sleep is poor.
Affective effects on sleep deprivation
Depressed mood
Heightened anxiety
Inappropriate emotional reactions
Behavioral effects of sleep deprivation

Cognitive effects of sleep deprivation
Decreased ability or inability to concentrate and direct attention
Illogical or irrational thoughts
Difficulty completing simple, repetitive tasks

Alcohol consumption and sleep deprivation both may contribute to a reduced ability to concentrate on certain stimuli or tasks at hand.
Concentration
The ability to focus on certain stimuli or tasks.
Sleep deprivation and alcohol consumption effect on mood
Sleep deprivation negatively affects someone’s mood, making them more irritable and sensitive. Alcohol can make people feel happy and excited or alternatively more angry or sad.
Both sleep deprivation and alcohol alter someone’s mood when compared to how they might feel in ordinary waking consciousness (NWC).
Blood alcohol concentration (BAC)
A measure of how much alcohol is in a person’s blood.
