Chp 9.1 acids Flashcards
Name 3 physical properties of an acid?
1) Sour
2) Turn Blue litmus paper to red litmus paper
3) pH less than 7
Other: conducts electricity .
What are 3 types of acids?
Hydrochloric acid
Nitric acid
Sulfuric acid
How do u test for carbon dioxide and what did u observe?
Using an aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide / limewater.
White precipitate is formed.
What will happen to the blue litmus paper if water is added to dissolve the critic acid?
It will turn blue litmus paper red.
How do u test for hydrogen gas?
Bringing a lighted wooden splint towards the hydrochloric acid solution.
What do you observe when testing for hydrogen?
Effervescence [bubbling /fizzing]
What happens to the lighted wooden splint ?
It extinguished with a pop sound.
Hydrochloric acid to salt
Chloride , Cl−
Nitric acid to salt
Nitrate, NO3-
Sulfuric acid to salt
Sulfate , SO4 2-
Example of
Acid + metal -> salt + hydrogen gas?
Hydrochloric acid + magnesium
-> Magnesium chloride + hydrogen gas
Example of
Acid + metal carbonate ->
Salt + water + carbon dioxide gas?
Nitric acid + sodium carbonate->
Sodium nitrate + water + carbon dioxide
Example of :
Acid + base -> salt + water ?
Clue: base like metal hydroxide/ metal oxide
Sulfuric acid + sodium hydroxide
-> sodium Sulfate + water .
Another example of
Acid + base -> salt + water?
Sulfuric acid + magnesium oxide
-> magnesium Sulfate + water
How does Neutralisation work? And what do u observe ?
When an acid and alkali reacted to neutralise. (pH is 7)
The test tube is warm.
