Chp 9.2: Bases Flashcards
What is a base?
A base is a substance that reacts with an acid to form salt and water ONLY.
What is the general equation of a base?
Base + acid -> salt + water
Example of base?
-Metal Oxide
-Metal hydroxide
When ammonium chloride is added into the sodium hydroxide , what did you observe?
Effervescence
What will happen to the red litmus paper?
It will turn red litmus paper blue.
Colourless solution left in test tube after testing for ammonia ?
Sodium chloride solution
Name all 6 insoluble bases.
1) Sodium oxide
2) Potassium oxide
3) Sodium hydroxide
4) Potassium hydroxide
5) Calcium hydroxide
6) Aqueous ammonia
Name all soluble bases
1) Magnesium Oxide
2) Copper (II) oxide
3) Iron ( II ) oxide
4)Zinc oxide
5) Zinc hydroxide
Example of :
Acid + Alkali -> salt + water?
Sulfuric acid + sodium hydroxide
-> sodium hydroxide + water
Example of :
Alkali + ammonium salt ->
Salt + water + ammonia gas?
Sodium hydroxide + ammonium chloride-> sodium + water + ammonia.
SPCA?
Sodium , potassium , calcium , ammonia .
