Axial Skeleton
Skull, vertebral column, and the thoracic cage; forms longitudinal axis of the body and protects the brain, spinal cord, heart, and lungs.
Skull
Composed of cranium and facial bones
Cranium
8 bones that enclose and protect the fragile brain tissue
Facial bones
14 bones that support the eyes and position them anteriorly; provide attachment for facial muscles.
Sutures
interlocking fibrous joints that join the bones of the skull.
Frontal
Forms the forehead, superior part of the orbit, and the floor of the anterior cranial fossa.
Parietal
Form the superior and lateral aspects of the skull.
Temporal
Forms the inferolateral and lateral aspects of the skull and contribute to the middle cranial fossa; each has squamous, tympanic, and petrous parts.
