Chp. 8: Skeleton Overview Flashcards
Skeleton
Body’s framework; composed of cartilage and bone
Red marrow cavities of bones
site for hematopoiesis (blood cell formation)
Articular cartilages
cover the bone at ends of moveable joints
Costal cartilages
connect the ribs to the sternum
Laryngeal cartilages
largely construct the larynx
Tracheal/ bronchial cartilages
reinforce other passageways of the respiratory system
Nasal cartilages
support the external nose
Intervertebral discs
separate and cushion the vertebrae
Tuberosity
Large rounded projection; may be roughened
Crest
Narrow ridge of bone; usually prominent
Trochanter
Very large, blunt, irregularly shaped process
Line
Narrow ridge of bone; less prominent than a crest
Tubercle
Small rounded projection or process
Epicondyle
Raised area on or above a condyle
Spine
Sharp, slender, often pointed projection
Process
Any bony prominence
Head
Bony expansion carried on a narrow neck
Facet
Smooth, nearly flat articular surface
Condyle
Rounded articular projection
Ramus
Armlike bar of bone
Groove
Furrow
Fissure
Narrow, slitlike opening
Foramen
Round or oval opening through a bone
Notch
Indentation at the edge of a structure
Meatus
Canal-like passageway
Sinus
Bone cavity, filled with air and lined with mucous membrane
Fossa
Shallow basin-like depression in a bone, often serving as an articular surface
Hyaline cartilage
provides sturdy support with some flexibility; composes most skeletal cartilages
Elastic cartilage
much more flexible than hyaline cartilage, and tolerates bending. Only in external ear and epiglottis
Fibrocartilage
consists of rows of chondrocytes, alternating with rows of thick collagen fibers. Has great tensile strength and can withstand heavy compression; composes intervertebral discs and knee joint cartilage.
Compact bone
smooth and homogenous
Spongy (cancellous) bone
composed of small trabeculae (columns) of bone and lots of open space
4 types of bones
Long, short, flat, irregular
Sesamoid bones
special types of short bones formed within tendons (kneecaps)
Sutural bones
tiny bones between cranial bones
