Homicide is divided into two broad classifications :
- Non felonious
* Felonious
Algor Mortis
Muscles of the body become rigid and the joints freeze.
Livor Mortis
Reddish purple coloration in dependent areas of the body due to accumulation of blood in the small vessels of the dependent areas secondary to gravity. Often confused with bruising.
Insects and crime
Insects are invariably the first witnesses to a crime, arriving within minutes or even seconds after death.
Five most common types of wounds encountered by the police officer in injury and death investigations :
Firearms, incised, stab, puncture and lacerations.
Gunshot Residue (GSR)
Analysis used to determine if a subject may have fired a weapon, handled an object. Remains on the hands for 3 hours, 8 hours on the face and 48 hours in the nasal cavity.
