Field interview/information report :
Filled out when patrolling officers identify persons or vehicles that are suspicious to them but are not connected with any particular offense.
Solvability factors :
Elements of information that have been demonstrated to correlate with higher probabilities of investigative success. Factors include: is the suspect named, can be suspect be identified, is there a detailed 10-34 of the suspect, is there significant physical evidence, are other suspects named, identified or described in detail, etc.
Surveillance :
Continued observance of people, places, and things to obtain information of investigative significance. The most frequently used surveillance type is Covert.
Two types of surveillance :
- Physical - Personally done by one or more members of a team.
- Technical - Involves the use of various advanced tech such as GPS, pinhole cameras, acoustic microphones, wire taps, etc.
Eyewitnesses may be requested to see if they recognize anyone connected with the crime in one of three procedures :
- Photo lineup
- “Live” Lineup
- Show up
Cold case :
The most extreme form of a follow up, is the reopening of an activated, unsolved case. The most common type of cold case investigation is a murder or serial murders. Followed by rapes.
Four types of intelligence :
Indicative - Focuses on emerging and new criminal developments.
Tactical - Immediately actionable and often results in arrests.
Strategic - Gathered and analyzed over time and visually confirms newly discovered patterns of criminal activity.
Evidential - Factual, precise information that can be presented in court.
6 continuous step process of the intelligence/analytical process :
- Planning and direction
- Collection
- Processing
- Analysis and production
- Dissemination
- Re-evaluation
Trends -
General tendencies in the occurrence of crime across large geographic areas over extended periods of time.
Patterns -
Same crime committed repeatedly over a short period of time, sometimes but not always by the same offender. Ex purse snatching from females walking to their cars.
Series -
The same type of crime is committed over a short period of time, probably by the same offender. Ex. 6 B/Es occur in 9 days.
Sprees -
The same type of offense is committed at almost the same time by the same offender.
Hot spots -
Location where various crimes are committed on a regular basis usually by different perps.
Crimogen -
Either an individually known offender who is responsible for a large number of crimes or one victim who reports a large number of crimes.
