Corbelled
A series of projections, each one step progressively outward from the vertical face of the wall as it rises up to support a cornice or overhanging member above.
Ashlar masonry
Stone cut in rectangular units.
Cantilever wall
A freestanding wall unsecured at the top that acts like a cantilever beam with respect to lateral loads, such as wind or a hose stream.
Coping
The masonry cap on top of a wall.
Cornice
A projecting decorative ledge at the top of a masonry wall.
Dog iron
Connects the girders and parts some lateral stability under normal conditions; resembles a big staple.
Flying Buttress
Masonry Pier at a distance from the wall and connected to it that resists the outward thrust of the roof.
Parging(pargetting)
Application of mortar to the back of the facing material or the face of the backing material.
Pintle
Square metal device used to transfer loads of columns on upper floors by passing the loads through intervening beams in girders to metal column caps on the column below.
Terra-cotta tile
Made of clay and fine sand and fired in a kiln.
Wythe
A single continuous vertical wall of bricks, one masonry unit in thickness.
