Chp 7 Mass Wasting Flashcards
Define Mass Wasting:
It is the movement of solid material down a slope due to the action of gravity.
What are the Classifications of Mass Wasting?
There are 4 classifications to Mass wasting:
1. Creep
Refers to the slow downslope movement of soil.
- Flow
Descending mass moving like a viscous fluid. - Fall
materials free falls or bounces of a cliff.
Freefall
4. Slide
descending mass remains relatively intact, and descends along well-defined
surfaces.
There are 2 types of slides:
- translational slide
movement along plane and parallel to motion
- rotational slide
movement along a curved surface.
What are the different ways of preventing landslides?
Preventing Rock Fall
- Remove loose material
- Stitch the slopes together.
Preventing mass wasting of soil:
- Construct retaining wall with drains
- Don’t oversteepen slopes during construction.
- Remove all rock that is prone to sliding
- Cover roads
