Chp 3 Igneous Rocks Flashcards
What is a rock?
A rock is a naturally formed, consolidated material usually composed of grains of one or more minerals.
Describe the rock cycle.
Shows how one type of rock material gets transferred into another type.
Notes about the rock cycle:
- All types of rocks are made from each other except igneous rocks.
How are Igneous rocks formed?
When magma cools
Describe the textures of Igneous rocks.
They can be coarse-grained which means formed by slow-cooling magma. Course-grained igneous rocks are also intrusive and phaneritic.
They can be fine-grained which means that they are formed by rapid cooling magma. Phanertic rocks have also large visible crystals.
Describe the chemical composition of Igneous rocks.
Igneous rocks can be either felsic or mafic.
Mafic has high iron and magnesium content.
Felsic are majority non Fe, Mg
