chp 4 quiz Flashcards
Beatitude
an attitude guiding us to follow Jesus more closely in order and achieve holiness and happiness
charisms
special gifts the Holy Spirit gives to individual Christians to build up the Church
discipleship
the mandate of all baptized Christians to follow Jesus and participate in his role as priest, prophet, and king
Good Samaritan
a parable Jesus uses to teach people to love their neighbor and who their neighbor is. this parable explains how love can be difficult and includes Jesus’ charge to love our enemies
grace
an unearned and free gift from God, infused to our souls at Baptism, that adopts us into God’s family and helps us to live as His children
justification
the Holy Spirit’s grace that cleanses us from our sins through faith in Jesus and Baptism. justification makes us right with God
Kingdom of God
God’s peace, justice, and love that was proclaimed by Jesus and inaugurated in his life, death, and resurrection. it refers to the process of God reconciling and renewing all things through Jesus, to the fact of His will being done on earth as it is in Heaven. the process has begun with Jesus and will be perfectly completed at the end of time
letter of the Law
a strict interpretation of the Law that does not go into much depth. while still important, it only says what to do or what not to do. it is a more literal and direct interpretation of the Law
merit
a word that means “what is owed to us” as either a punishment or reward because we did something that harms or helps our relationship with God
salt and light
Jesus says that people who adopt his attitude will be salt of the earth and light of the world, two things that stress living by Jesus’ moral code and make us a sign of God’s presence in the world
salt adds flavor to food and preserves it; Christians who live the Beatitude help Jesus in his work of salvation in a similar way; they bring a certain flavoring to life by spicing it up and pouring the way to God’s Kingdom (which shows there is more to happiness than the ordinary fare that is offered to people)
Christians (partly through being salt of the earth) can bring the light of Christ to people
by cooperating with grace given by the Holy Spirit and trying our best to live Jesus’ standards of morality, we will become the light for the world and salt of the earth and will attract others to the Good News of the Gospel, to God’s Kingdom
Sermon on the Mount
a proclamation by Jesus of the requirements for Christian discipleship where Jesus is compared Moses and is the new lawgiver
Spirit of the Law
the intent of the Law that goes into more depth and explains the meaning of the Law; it explains how to act and why we should act that way. Jesus involves the Spirit of the Law in the New Law, he perfects the Old Testament Law by intensifying it and by setting a higher standard, that is the law of love
