At the most basic level, theories are important because they help counselors:
- Weed through a vast amount of presenting information and understand and recognize what client information needs to be identified, gathered, and organized
- Conceptualize clients’ situations and identify what is supporting their problems in living
- Identify ways of approaching clients that can help them make changes.
An effective theory:
is easily understood and comprehensive, provides explanations for a wide variety of presenting issues, and generates research.
Therapeutic relationship
characterized by collaboration, trust, mutual investment in the therapy process, shared respect, genuineness, and positive emotional feelings
Characteristics of successful clients
1) Client motivation
2) Client expectation (hope/optimism)
3) Client engagement
The strength of the therapeutic alliance is one of the most powerful predictors of client outcome
Change can occur when (traits)
empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence (or being genuine with a client)
ADDRESSING can be used to help therapist develop a greater understanding of themselves and their clients
A = age
D = disability (acquired)

R = religion and spirituality

G = gender/sex
Strengths-based approach
a focus on clients strength, resources, wellness, and capacities
- holistic, balanced, and optimistic approach
- believes that the client has the ability to provide their own solutions to their problems
- therapists should work with the client to identify already existing strengths and build upon them to promote resiliency and positive change
The four areas to explore to promote resiliency include:
- social competence
- problem solving
- autonomy
- sense of purpose
Level of care
the setting and intensity of service that clients require to be safe and successful in meeting their counseling goals
Continuum of care
the idea that client enter therapy at a level of care appropriate to their needs and they then step up to more intense levels or they step down to less intense levels of treatment needed
The setting of counseling will impact which counseling theory is used
various settings include CMH, schools, addictions, impatient programs, career
Informed consent/assent
formal action of consenting to counseling which serves as an agreement between all parties involved that they understand what will happen in counseling
Competence
possessing the knowledge, skills and diligence required to effectively function and meet professional expectations and standards
Evidence based practices (EBPs)
research based treatments and interventions used in addressing and treating those with various mental disorders
Ethical Decision making: practical suggestions
- Be thorough and thoughtful
- Be self and other aware
- Be transparent and communicative
- Be educated
- Be support seeking
