Abstraction (subtraction)
The process of altering or reducing the realistic appearance/ features of the original inspiration while maintaining the ‘essence’ of the idea.
Accumulation
New movements are added to existing movements in a successive manner.
Augmentation
Making a movement larger
Distortion
A process which manipulates the shape or structure of the motif or phrase.
Embellishment
Adding detail to the movement such as a hand or head move.
Insertion
Adding new material into the movement.
Inversion
A process for manipulating a motif or phrase where the position of the body is reversed as the movement is performed.
Either upside down or reversed laterally.
Rearrangement
Movement is taken apart and reorganised into the desired order to create progression.
Repetition
A movement motif or phrase repeated exactly the same.
It creates emphasis and helps to consolidate the image in the audience’s mind and strengthen or clarify the intent.
Retrograde
A motif or phrase performed backwards, like rewinding a video.
