CHOOSING A STATISTICAL TEST Flashcards
why are statistical tests carried out?
to determine whether a difference or an association found in a particular investigation in satistically significant
3 factors which determine what statistical test is used are…
1 - researcher is looking at diff/correlation
2 - if looking at difference, what experimental design is used (related or unrelated)
3 - level of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval)
how do we know if we are looking at a difference or correlation?
wording of hypothesis
if correlation - relationship
if diff - one thing affecting another
what are the 3 types of experimental design?
- independent groups
- repeated measure
- matched pairs
1 is unrelated and 2 + 3 are related
what is nominal data?
categories, discrete
what is ordinal data?
out in order e.g. scale, lacks precision as it isn’t objective
what is interval data?
based on numerical scales of units with equal defined size e.g. stopwatch
