Cholesterol Flashcards
What is Cholesterol?
It is a short lipid molecule that is essential for good health.
Where does cholesterol come from?
75% produced in our liver from saturated fats
25% from our diet
What is HDL?
High Density Lipoprotein
What is LDL?
Low density Lipoprotein
What is HDL made of?
- 20% cholesterol
- Triglycerides with saturated fatty acids
- Different apoproteins
What is LDL made up of?
- 40% cholesterol
- Triglycerides with unsaturated fatty acids
- Apoprotein B
Is LDL good or bad
LDL is known as bad cholesterol
Is HDL good or bad?
HDL is known as good cholesterol
What are lipoproteins?
Proteins are soluble in water; Cholesterol is combined with proteins to form lipoproteins.
Describe LDL cholesterol uptake
1) LDL receptors on the surface of the cell bind to the LDL molecule.
2) LDL that binder to the receptor enters the cell through endocytosis
3) LDL is separated from the LDL receptors due to low pH
4) LDL receptors recycled back to the cell membrane
5) LDL molecule fuses with lysozyme
6) LDL is degraded and cholesterol is released.
Why is chlesterol not transported around the body in its “normal” molecular form?
Cholesterol is transported around the bloodstream inside lipoprotein particles because is cholesterol is insoluble.
Is cholesterol soluble or insoluble?
Insoluble in water
Where does HDL transport cholesterol to?
Transport cholesterol to the liver to be broken down.
Where does LDL transport cholesterol to?
Transports cholesterol from the liver to the cells
Name the 2 forms in which cholesterol is trasported around the body
HDL and LDL
