Cardiovascular Diesease Flashcards
What is cardiovascular disease?
A group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels
How does cholesterol affect CVD?
High levels of cholesterol can make fatty deposits in your blood. This can lead to a blockage in your arteries.
How does Alcohol affect CVD?
it decrease blood flow to the muscles, affect heart rhythm.
How does age affect CVD?
Arteries become less elastic with age.
How does gender affect CVD?
Women naturally have high HDL levels reducing risk of atheroma, oestrogen also increase blood flow.
How does stress effect CVD?
stress cause the release of adrenaline which increase the heart rate and constricts the arteries.
How does smoking affect CVD?
Smoking causes plaque to build up on your blood vessels.
How does a high salt diet effect CVD?
A high salt diet increases your blood pressure and will therefore increase your risk of CVD.
untreated high blood pressure puts strain on the heart and can lead to the thickening of the heart muscle which can reduce the effectiveness of the heart’s pumping action and result in heart attacks or heart failure.
How does exercise affect CVD?
Exercise is good. it lowers blood pressure, healthier cholesterol levels and better blood sugar regulation.
How does Atherosclerosis affect CVD?
Build up of fatty material in the blood vessels. Blocks your blood vessels.
How does free radicals affect CVD?
an increase in oxidative stress and initiates subcellular changes leading to cardiomyopathy and heart failure.
How does obesity affect CVD?
Blood pressure increases and LDL intake increases.
