What is it?
A
Abnormal collection of keratinocytes and squamous epithelium
Causes local destruction and damage to structures in middle ear
Can lead to problems with hearing and balance if untreated
Can become infected
Can be congenital (associated with clef palate) or acquired

What are the clinical features?
A
Recurrent foul smelling discharge- does not respond to abx
Hearing loss
Vertigo
Tinnitius
Dizziness
Facial nerve palsy
Otoscopy- discharge within canal, crust in upper tympanic membrane, perforation

What is the management?
A
Refer to ENT
- requires CT and audiology
Treat with surgical removal
Admit if signs of complications e.g. vertigo, nerve palsy or infection
