Chloroplasts And Light Trapping Flashcards
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2+6H20 - C6H12O6 + 6O2
Where do the light dependent and light independent stages take place?
Light dependent = thylakoid membranes / grana
Light independent = stroma
Where are chloroplasts located?
In the stem and leaves of the plant, in the palisade mesophyll
Give 5 advantages of leaves for photosynthesis.
- Large surface area
- Thin
- They have stomatal pores
- Air spaces in the mesophyll
- Spaces between palisade cells
Give 4 advantages of cells for photosynthesis.
- Cuticle + epidermis transparent
- Cellulose cell walls are thin
- Palisade cells have a large vacuole
- Palisade cells are cylindrical, elongated at right angles to the surface of the leaf
Explain why having palisade cells at right angles to the leaf is an advantage
Leaves can accommodate a large number of them and light passes through less cell walls
Give 5 advantages of chloroplasts for photosynthesis.
- Large surface area
- Move within palisade cells
- Rotate within cells
- Pigments in the thylakoids are at the surface of the membrane
- 5x as many in palisade cells than mesophyll cells
What are the two main classes of pigments in flowering plants?
Chlorophyll and carotenoids
