What are the pathogenic types of Chlamydia?
Family of gram-negative, obligate intracellular bacteria that includes 3 organisms pathogenic to humans: Chlamydia trachomatis, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, and Chlamydophila psittaci
What are the symptoms of Chlamydial genitourinary infections?
Majority asymptomatic
(Muco)purulent vaginal discharge / Intermentsrual bleeding / Post-coital bleeding
Dysuria, polyuria, dyspareunia
Pelivc inflammatory disease
How is Chlamydia diagnosed?
(1st) Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT) (i.e. PCR)
(2nd) Antigen detection
What is the treatment for Chlamydia?
Azithromycin / doxycycline
Treat sexual partner as well
What are the complications of Chlamydia?
PID Ectopic pregnancy Infertility Reactive arthritis Perinatal transmission of infection to the newborn
What is Lymphogranuloma venereum?
Caused by Chlamydia trachomatis
Painless genital ulcers that heal spontaneously. Can lead to abscess formation and chronic lymphedema
What are the clinical features of lymphogranuloma vernereum?
(Primary infection) painless, herpetiform ulcers
(Secondary infection) painful lymph nodes in the inguinal region
What is the treatment for lymphogranuloma vernereum?
Doxycycline / erythromycin
