Chirality Applications Flashcards
Rule dictating no of chiral centers (no of Chiral Cs) and no of stereoisomers (R and S configs (mirror images))
no stereoisomers = 2^n. n = no. of chiral centers
Enantiomers def
Non-superimposable mirror images with opposite congigurations
Diastereomers Def
Not mirror images. Same configuration at 1 chiral C and different at another. Different effects on refracting life (angles are different). May not be different
Achiral Distinguishing factor
A line of symmetry
Applications of chirality
Different receptor interactions depending on which configuration interacts. 1 side may have more binding site exposed then the other. This typically results in only 1 config being therapeutically active (with some exceptions)
Case study of therapuetic properties in enantiomers being harmful
Thalidomide. Molecule A relieved morning sickness and molecule B inteacts with fetus
