Chirality Flashcards
What is a constitutional isomer
Isomers which have the same formula but different atomic arrangement
What is a stereoisomer
Isomers which have the same molecular formula but different spatial arrangement
What is geometric isomer
Cis or z (same side) and trans E (opposite)
What is an E and a Z stereoisomers
E is opposite side and Z is the same side
What is a stereoisomer
Isomers with the same molecular formula but are non superimposable
What is a chiral carbon
A molecule with 4 different groups on it
What is D and L isomerism with carbohydrates
The most oxidised c is at the top of the molecule and if the bottom OH is:
- to the left, then its a L isomerism
To the right, then it’s a D isomerism
What is the Cahn Ingle pre log rules (r/s)
Ordering groups in order of priority around a chiral carbon. If the order is clockwise its a R isomerism if its left, its an S isomerism.
2 Similarities between enantiomers
They have the same physical and chemical properties.
